There was quite a contrast between two stories reported yesterday. On the one hand, we recorded the celebration of Polk County’s recognition in USA Today as one of America's Top 25 retire ment "dream" locations. In the other column was a reminder that even a "dream" location docs not, by itself, save us. Two men committed sui cide Monday — one, relatively young, still working, died yes terday at St. Luke's; the other, retired, living alone, was dis covered by his housekeeper Tuesday, already gone. It is no surprise to know that even a "Top 25" place cannot guarantee one freedom from emptiness. I ve erased every philosophi cal and religious thought I've tried to express in response to that contrast. I would only say that I've met very many people here who would ve welcomed a chance at east to try to meet the needs of these two men. That feature transcends retirc- (Continued On Back Page) TRYON. Tickets at $12.50 each will be available at the door. Proceeds go to the Polk County Heart Fund. Receives Scholarship Penelope M. Voso has been selected by the UN-Chapci Hill's School of Education to receive the Marvin D. Wine Graduate Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to a graduate student preparing to become a Special Educator with a strong interest in mental retardation. Penelope, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Philip T. Voso of Tryon, will receive her M.Ed in Special Education from Chapel Hill in June. New Arrival John and Jill Mize of Colum bus are parents of a son, John Thomas Mize, III. He was born on Feb. 11 at Mary Black Hos pital and weighed 9 lbs. 3 oz. Maternal grandparents are Laura Bradshaw of Tryon and the late Dr. John Bradshaw. Paternal grandparents are Dr. and Mrs. J.T. "Tom" Mize of Tryon.
